I requested a quote from Alpha a little while back and was told that the installation would be straightforward and a 'good deal'. When i received the quote, i was shocked that the pricing was 60-70%+ or more higher than market value of the units plus a reasonable install fee, so of course I let it go. I was continually contacted to take up the offer, but I ignored. When i initially submitted this review, i was immediately harassed, phone called repeatedly about this feedback, basically telling me / threatening me to remove the feedback. The owner is a charlatan looking to take people for a ride and is also dishonest. Be wary.

Preparation for Installation

Before the installation of a reverse cycle ducted system, homeowners should take a few important steps to ensure a smooth and successful installation process.

Protecting Furniture and Furnishings

One of the key considerations during the installation is protecting valuable furniture and furnishings from dust and debris. Homeowners are advised to place dust covers over their furniture, especially those in close proximity to the installation area. This simple precaution can help prevent any potential damage during the installation process.

Preferred Location for Outdoor Unit

Choosing the right location for the outdoor unit is crucial for optimal system performance and convenience. Homeowners should consider factors such as proximity to bedrooms, outdoor living areas, and the switchboard when determining the preferred location. A well-placed outdoor unit can minimize noise disruptions and provide easy access for maintenance and repairs.

Preferred Location for Controllers

In addition to the outdoor unit, homeowners should also decide on the preferred location for the controllers, such as wall-mounted control panels or smartphone interfaces. It is recommended to choose a central and easily accessible location, allowing for convenient control of the system from various areas of the home.

During the installation process, the senior installer may provide further recommendations based on the specific layout of the property and the length of the pipe run.

The Installation Process

When it comes to installing a reverse cycle ducted system, the process involves several important steps that ensure a smooth and efficient installation. Let’s take a detailed look at each of these steps:

Detailed Inspection

Prior to installation, a thorough inspection of the roof cavity is conducted. This inspection helps in planning the optimal location for the indoor unit, air ducts, return air grille, and outdoor unit. It allows the installers to determine the most suitable layout for the system.

Disassembling the Indoor Unit

The indoor unit of the reverse cycle ducted system is disassembled into three parts, namely the air mixing plenum, fan deck, and fan coil unit. This is necessary to ensure that the individual components can fit into the ceiling cavity comfortably. Disassembling the indoor unit helps in the seamless installation process.

Suspending the Indoor Unit

Once the indoor unit components are disassembled, they are suspended from the roof structure. This step eliminates any vibrations or disturbances that could affect the system’s performance. The suspended indoor unit is secured in place to ensure stability and optimal functionality.

Connecting the Outdoor Unit

After suspending the indoor unit, the outdoor unit is placed in its designated position. Refrigeration pipes and electrical interconnects are then run from the outdoor unit to the indoor unit. This connection is essential for the seamless operation of the system.

Cutting Holes for Air Diffusers

To distribute conditioned air effectively, holes are cut in the ceiling or walls for the installation of air diffusers. These diffusers play a crucial role in delivering cool or warm air to different areas of the home. Careful consideration is given to the size and placement of these holes to ensure optimal airflow.

Connecting Air Ducts

The installation process involves laying and connecting air ducts, which serve as the pathways for conditioned air. The air ducts are carefully aligned and connected to the branches, ultimately linking back to the air mixing plenum. This step ensures efficient airflow throughout the house.

Connecting Return Air Ducts

In addition to the supply air ducts, return air ducts are connected from the indoor unit to the return air box. These ducts help in the circulation of air back to the unit for reconditioning. The connection of return air ducts ensures the system’s overall efficiency.

Running Control Cables

Control cables are run to the zone motors and from the wall controllers to the indoor unit. These cables enable the seamless control and operation of the system. They ensure that temperature settings and other functionalities can be easily adjusted and monitored by the user.

Commissioning the System

Once all the components and connections are in place, the system is commissioned. This involves a complete check of the system’s functionality and performance. It ensures that the system is in perfect working condition, ready to provide efficient cooling and heating throughout the home. Any further adjustments or fine-tuning are made during this stage.

The installation process concludes with a fully operational reverse cycle ducted system that provides optimal comfort and temperature control in your home.

Benefits of Ducted Air Conditioning

Ducted air conditioning offers numerous benefits for homeowners, making it a popular choice for whole-home cooling and heating. One of the key advantages is the ability to cool or heat the entire home using a single system, providing comfort throughout every room. This eliminates the need for multiple air conditioners or heaters, simplifying the cooling and heating process.

One notable benefit of ducted air conditioning is its quiet operation. Unlike traditional split systems, the fan of a ducted system is located in the roof cavity, minimizing noise within the living areas. This ensures a peaceful and tranquil environment without the disturbance of a noisy air conditioner.

Another advantage is smartphone control, which allows homeowners to conveniently manage and adjust their ducted air conditioning system through a smartphone app. This feature offers flexibility and convenience, enabling temperature control from anywhere within the house or even remotely. It also promotes energy efficiency by allowing users to switch the system on or off, adjust airflow, and set temperature preferences according to their specific needs.

Speaking of energy efficiency, ducted air conditioning systems are designed to be highly efficient, helping homeowners reduce their energy consumption and costs. With zoning capabilities, these systems allow for the adjustment of airflow to specific rooms or zones within the house. This means that you can cool or heat occupied areas while leaving unoccupied zones at an energy-saving temperature. By optimizing the airflow and temperature control, ducted air conditioning systems offer superior energy efficiency compared to traditional cooling or heating methods.

In summary, the benefits of ducted air conditioning include whole-home cooling and heating capabilities, quiet operation, smartphone control for easy management, energy efficiency through zoned cooling, and personalized temperature control in every room. These advantages make ducted air conditioning a desirable choice for homeowners seeking optimal comfort, convenience, and energy savings.

Ducted vs Split System Air Conditioners

When it comes to choosing the right air conditioning system for your home, there are two main options to consider: ducted air conditioners and wall-split air conditioners.

Ducted Air Conditioners

Ducted air conditioners are designed to cool or heat the entire home. They use a network of ducts installed throughout the house to distribute cool or warm air to every room. This type of system offers whole-home cooling and heating, ensuring consistent comfort throughout your living spaces.

One of the key advantages of ducted air conditioners is their quiet operation. The indoor unit, including the fan, is located in the roof cavity, reducing noise levels in the living areas. This makes ducted systems ideal for bedrooms or living rooms where quietness is important.

Ducted systems also offer centralized control, allowing you to adjust the temperature and control the airflow from a single control panel or even remotely through a smartphone app. This convenience adds to the overall comfort and ease of use of the system.

Split System Air Conditioners

In contrast, split system air conditioners are best suited for cooling or heating individual rooms. These systems consist of one indoor unit and one outdoor unit. The indoor unit is installed on a wall and is responsible for cooling or heating the room in which it is situated.

Split systems are an excellent choice for smaller spaces or for complementing the cooling capacity of a ducted system. For example, if you have a home with a ducted system but want to cool a specific room that requires additional cooling, installing a split system in that room can provide targeted comfort without overloading your main system.

Comparing ducted systems and split systems, the choice ultimately depends on your specific needs and preferences. If you want to cool or heat your entire home and value quiet operation and centralized control, a ducted system is the way to go. On the other hand, if you only need to cool or heat individual rooms and want more flexibility, a split system may be the better option.

How Ducted Air Conditioning Works

Ducted air conditioning is a highly effective system that circulates cool or heated air throughout your home using a network of insulated ducts and grilles. The system consists of two main components: the indoor unit and the outdoor unit.

Indoor Unit

The indoor unit of a ducted air conditioning system houses a cooling or heating coil and a fan. This unit is typically placed in the roof cavity or a dedicated utility room. When the system is in cooling mode, the fan pulls warm air from the rooms into the indoor unit.

Inside the indoor unit, the air passes over the cooling coil. The cooling coil is filled with refrigerant gas, which absorbs the heat from the air, cooling it down. As a result, the air becomes cold and dehumidified.

Similarly, when the system is in heating mode, the fan pulls cool air from the rooms. The air passes over the heating coil, which is heated by the refrigerant gas. The heated air is then distributed back into the rooms, effectively warming up the space.

Outdoor Unit

The outdoor unit of a ducted air conditioning system contains a compressor and circulates refrigerant gas. The compressor pressurizes the refrigerant, which then flows through a series of pipes connecting the indoor and outdoor units.

As the refrigerant passes through the indoor coil, it absorbs or releases heat, depending on the mode selected (cooling or heating). The refrigerant system is designed to efficiently transfer heat, allowing for effective cooling or heating of the indoor air.

Airflow and Temperature Control

The conditioned air from the indoor unit is distributed throughout your home via a network of insulated ducts and grilles. The ducts deliver the cold or warm air to each room or zone, ensuring consistent temperature control throughout the house.

The airflow and temperature in each room can be adjusted using control panels or wall-mounted controllers. This allows you to customize the level of cooling or heating in different areas of your home, providing personalized comfort for you and your family.

In conclusion, ducted air conditioning works by circulating cool or heated air through a network of insulated ducts and grilles. The indoor unit houses the cooling or heating coil and fan, while the outdoor unit contains the compressor and circulates refrigerant gas. With precise temperature control and efficient airflow, ducted air conditioning provides optimal comfort for your entire home.

Cost of Ducted Air Conditioning

The cost of installing a ducted air conditioning system can vary depending on several factors. These include the size and complexity of the system, the chosen brand and model, and the specific installation requirements. When considering the cost, it’s important to take into account the unit cost, component cost, and installation cost.

The unit cost refers to the price of the air conditioning system itself. This cost can vary depending on the brand, model, and features. It’s recommended to research different brands and models to find one that fits within your budget and meets your specific cooling and heating needs.

The component cost includes the cost of ducts, vents, and other necessary components for the installation. The size of the system and the layout of your home will determine the quantity and complexity of these components, which will affect the overall cost.

Lastly, the installation cost covers the labor and expertise required to properly install the ducted air conditioning system. Professional installation is crucial to ensure optimal performance and long-term reliability. The cost of installation can vary depending on the complexity of the installation, the duration of the project, and any additional requirements or modifications needed.

As for the overall cost, it’s important to note that prices can vary significantly depending on the size and nature of the installation. For small homes or apartments, the cost of a ducted air conditioning system can range from $6,999 to $9,999, including GST. Medium-sized, single-storey homes may cost approximately $9,999 to $13,999, while large or multi-storey homes can cost around $14,000 to $20,000.

It’s important to obtain a detailed quote from a professional installation company to get an accurate cost estimate based on your specific requirements and preferences. A professional can assess your home, discuss your cooling and heating needs, and provide a tailored quote that includes all costs involved.
