I requested a quote from Alpha a little while back and was told that the installation would be straightforward and a 'good deal'. When i received the quote, i was shocked that the pricing was 60-70%+ or more higher than market value of the units plus a reasonable install fee, so of course I let it go. I was continually contacted to take up the offer, but I ignored. When i initially submitted this review, i was immediately harassed, phone called repeatedly about this feedback, basically telling me / threatening me to remove the feedback. The owner is a charlatan looking to take people for a ride and is also dishonest. Be wary.

Gas heaters are a popular heating choice in many Australian homes. However, they come with certain safety risks that should not be ignored. One of the most significant risks associated with gas heaters is the potential for carbon monoxide leaks. Carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas that can be poisonous if inhaled in high amounts.

What is Carbon Monoxide?

Carbon monoxide is a byproduct of incomplete combustion. It is produced when fuels such as natural gas, propane, and oil do not burn completely due to insufficient oxygen. Carbon monoxide can escape from your gas heater if there is a leak or blockage in the ventilation system. Exposure to carbon monoxide can cause symptoms such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, and even death in severe cases.

Important Safety Precautions

To minimize the risk of carbon monoxide leaks and other safety hazards, it is essential to follow these gas heater safety precautions:

  • Ensure proper ventilation in the room where the gas heater is located. The room should have a vent that leads directly outside and should not be sealed off completely.
  • Do not block or cover any vents, as this can lead to a build-up of carbon monoxide.
  • Have your gas heater serviced and inspected by a qualified professional at least once a year.
  • Install a carbon monoxide detector in the same room as your gas heater. The detector should meet Australian standards and be tested regularly.
  • Do not use outdoor gas heaters indoors, as they are not designed for indoor use.
  • Avoid using unflued gas heaters in bedrooms or other small rooms without proper ventilation.
  • If you suspect a gas leak or carbon monoxide leak, turn off the gas supply immediately, open all doors and windows, and evacuate the area. Call a licensed gas fitter to inspect and repair the issue.

Following these gas heater safety precautions can help keep you and your loved ones safe while enjoying the warmth of your gas heating system.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors and Alarms

Gas heating systems pose certain safety risks, including the potential for carbon monoxide leaks. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can cause serious health problems, and even death, if inhaled in large amounts. Therefore, it is crucial to have carbon monoxide detectors and alarms installed.

Carbon monoxide detectors and alarms work by sensing the presence of carbon monoxide in the air and sounding an alarm if dangerous levels are detected. These devices can be battery-operated or hard-wired into your home’s electrical system.

Placement of Carbon Monoxide Detectors and Alarms

Carbon monoxide detectors and alarms should be installed in every room that contains a gas heating appliance, as well as hallways and bedrooms. They should be placed at least 1.5 meters away from heating appliances and at a height of 1.5 meters from the floor. Avoid placing them in areas with high humidity or near windows and doors.

Maintenance of Carbon Monoxide Detectors and Alarms

Regular maintenance of carbon monoxide detectors and alarms is essential for their proper functioning. Test them once a month to ensure they are working correctly and replace batteries annually. If your device is hard-wired, check the battery backup regularly. Replace your detectors and alarms every five to seven years.

Compliance with gas heating safety regulations is crucial when it comes to carbon monoxide detectors and alarms. Make sure your devices meet Australian Standards and are installed by a licensed professional.

Ventilation and Airflow Considerations

Adequate ventilation and proper airflow are crucial for gas heating systems to function safely and efficiently. Without proper ventilation, gases can accumulate in enclosed spaces, leading to potential health hazards. In addition to posing a significant safety risk, poor ventilation can also cause the system to work harder and consume more gas to produce the same amount of heat, resulting in higher energy bills.

In Australia, gas heating safety regulations require that all gas heating installations have adequate ventilation and airflow. It is essential to consult these regulations and guidelines before installing a gas heating system to ensure proper ventilation and airflow.

One of the most common methods of ventilation for gas heating systems is natural ventilation, using external vents to bring in fresh air and expel gases. When installing natural ventilation, careful consideration must be given to the size and location of the vents to ensure sufficient airflow.

Another method is mechanical ventilation, which uses fans or blowers to circulate air in the room. Mechanical ventilation is ideal for ensuring that the air is evenly distributed throughout the room, preventing stagnant pockets of air from forming.

Ventilation and Airflow Checklist

  • Ensure that the gas heating system is installed according to Australian gas safety regulations and guidelines.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation and maintenance.
  • Have the system inspected and maintained regularly by a licensed gasfitter.
  • Install external vents to allow fresh air to enter the room and expel gases.
  • Ensure that the location and size of the vents are appropriate for the size of the room and the gas heating system.
  • Consider installing a mechanical ventilation system to ensure even airflow throughout the room.

Signs of Gas Heating System Issues

Regular maintenance is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of gas heating systems. However, even with proper care, issues may still arise. It is important to recognize the signs of potential problems to prevent further damage and maintain safety.
